RE: I let the wife drive home - pulling the fiver!

My wife soloed after a couple of trips… The 5er needed to be moved because of a flood and I was out of town…
Now she can haul the 5er anywhere anytime...

RE: ON A FAMILY VACATION - shouldn't my tires last longer?

I had all four Kenda Tires loose tread in a span of 400 miles. They were 3 years old and had 4000 total miles.
If I had only experienced one tread separation I might not have been very concerned, however, when the other three had the same problem I was ready for war... After a few phone calls and emails to Kenda they finally decided to help me towards the cost of my NEW Michelin XPS Ribs.

RE: 07 Dodge 6.7 tow mpg revisited

With 7,500 miles on the truck the best I got towing 14,000# was 10.3... Non towing in town 12.5 and on the road 16.0.
Hope it improves with increased mileage. My 04 5.9 was getting 20.5 on the road non towing.

RE: Sale of primary residence, fulltiming and IRS issue

This is the latest information effective today !!!
3. Vacation-Home Hit
We've been taking for granted that lovely $250,000 ($500,000 for couples filing jointly) personal residence capital-gains-tax exclusion for about a decade. Savvy taxpayers have played hopscotch, moving from home to vacation home to the next home, etc. and avoiding income taxes on the sale of each one. That free ride is at an end.
The personal resident exclusion is still good on your personal home. However, you'll be paying taxes on the sale of your vacation home, or rental property converted to a home. The tax will be based on the amount of days the house was not a qualified personal residence divided by the total number of days you owned it. This ratio is multiplied by the amount of gain realized on the sale of the property.
Gain resulting from depreciation taken on the property after May 6, 1997 won't be included in this computation. That gain will still be taxed separately as ordinary income.
The good news:
This won't affect any sales you make this year since the law becomes effective on Jan. 1, 2009.
The ownership period to take into account as the numerator for nonqualified use also starts on Jan. 1, 2009.
Snowbirds, folks who typically summer in their principal residences up north and spend winter in their vacation homes in the south will have to wait until IRS writes up regulations interpreting the new law. It's not clear if their temporary absences will be considered a period of nonqualified use.
The new law defines unqualified use as:
any period after the last date the property is used as the principal residence of the taxpayer or spouse (regardless of use during that period), and
any period (not to exceed two years) that the taxpayer is temporarily absent by reason of a change in place of employment, health, or, to the extent provided in regulations, unforeseen circumstances, are not taken into account.

RE: 235/85R16 tires

On my last trip I lost tread on all four “Chinese” Kenda tires – I replaced all tires including the spare with Michelin XPS Rib LT E 235/85R16 tires.
Although they are more expensive I consider them to be cheap insurance.
I also received damage to the 5er during the 2nd separation.
Additional info: After the first tire separation the only place open where I could replace the spare was a Wally-World. I bought a Goodyear Wrangler HT. When I got to the Michelin dealer he found the Goodyear was defective. I had a heck of a time getting a refund because I had not purchased the Wally-World tire warranty... I finally rolled the tire up to customer service and convinced them that it was a product defect. It had a slit in the sidewall and a zipper rip. Do not ask me what a zipper rip is??? That is what the dealer called the dent around the sidewall.

RE: 235/85R16 tires

Consider the Michelin XPS Ribs in that size. They are rated at 3042 pounds each at 80 psi, well within your requiremennts and are extremely reliable. Easier to find and cheaper than the G rated tires you really don't need. FWIW.
When we were checking options for tire replacement I checked on the hi pressure G rated tires and the Michelin dealer told me that they couldn't install the G rated tire on a 6 lug rim. I would need the 8 lug for the G rated tire.

RE: Open Road by Pilgrim, model 379rl4s-5

Three years and counting... Very high quality 5er, no problems that were not covered by the factory, only small stuff that was even covered after the warranty expired.
I would purchase another Open Road if this one ever wears out.

I used the GS service two times this month... It was as good as expected and well worth the cost.
I think most road service providers use the same company for the road work.

RE: Dodge 1 ton DRW

This is a super truck -- See signature -- It has much better power and handling than my last 04 one ton srw Dodge, and it was perfect. The mileage on the 07 6.7 is 4 mpg less than the 04 5.9, I'm getting 15.3 mixed on the 6.7 non towing.
Heading out on a 1000 mile trip over the 4th. Will do the towing mileage check and report.
Trip report after 500 miles:
9.4 mpg with 7,500 miles on the truck. One tread loss on the Famous Kenda Tires on the 5er. I will try to make it back to Texas on the spare and three remaining Kenda's. I've already ordered a set of Michelin XP Rib LT 235/85 R16 LRE tires and they will be installed at Discount tire.
If the mileage improves on the return trip I will report.

RE: 5th Airborne install by myself?

I used blocks in the bed of the truck to get the pin box to the correct height and adjusted the blocks so that the holes were lined up.
I had to lower my hitch to the lowest adjustment.

RE: Fulltime for life?

How long have you full timed? 2.5 years
Do you ever regret the decision to full time? NO, I like it more each day...
What, if anything, do you miss about an S/B home? "O"
Would you return to an S/B home and just part time RV? NO, The $18,000 in taxes, ins, and maint on the S/B will buy lots of fuel and campsites. I had rather pay $10.00 per gal fuel than pay taxes...
Do you plan on giving up the lifestyle at some point? Shortly after I'm dead...

RE: Will $6.00/gal stop you from full timing.

As soon as I sale the house I will save 12,000 Taxes+5,000 Ins & Maint = 17,000 to pay for fuel every year.
Now (while fulltiming) I'm spending 8,000 on fuel.
I will be making a profit!!!
